Our Story
The Welsh Language – Cymraeg is part of the Celtic Family of languages, and remained with the Celtic people when they fled westwards to an area now known as Wales. The fact the Welsh language continues today is testimony to the pride of the Welsh Nation.
Hand carved Lovespoons a Welsh Tradition dating back to the 17th Century, we are confident about this date as there is a spoon on display at St. Fagans National Museum in Cardiff which has been dated to 1667
Traditionally, Lovespoons were carved by the men of Wales who could not read or write and they were used as a token of his love and affection. Back in the 17th Century they would make the tools and use what ever wood was available, so what they lacked in education they made up for in abundance by developing their natural skills and creativity.
Although originally carved for practical purposes the spoon soon developed into a romantic gift with various symbols having different meanings the most common the solid heart. After time the designs became more intricate and varied i.e.
- Ball in the cage – represents the Children or Child
- The Harp – means harmony
- The Solid Heart – full of love
- Open Heart – Heart is open and receptive to each other love
The Lovespoon Centre offers a large selection of hand carved lovespoons and we are happy to discuss your requirements to help you choose which spoon would be appropriate for that special occasion
